Remove metadata from a PDF
A PDF can carry your name, your company, the programs you use, when you worked on it and even earlier versions of its text. Remove all of it before you send a CV, a report or a contract: pick the PDF and download a clean copy.
How to remove metadata from a PDF
- Tap Choose a PDF and pick the file.
- See what it reveals. Private details, like an author's name, are marked in red.
- Tap Remove all metadata and download the clean copy. Send that one, not the original.
What is removed and what stays
- Removed: the title, author, subject and keywords; the programs that made the file; the creation and modification dates; extra fields such as Company; the XMP metadata, with its editing history and document IDs; earlier versions saved inside the file; the names on comments and highlights; and the camera details and GPS location of JPG photos inside the PDF.
- Kept: every page as it was, with its text, pictures, links, bookmarks and form fields, and the text of comments.
Metadata isn't the only thing that can identify you. What is written on the pages stays, headers and footers included, so read the PDF before you send it.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and the PDF is never sent to dedigger or anyone else. dedigger only counts when a clean copy is downloaded.
Why does the file name stay the same?
The name isn't stored inside the PDF, but whoever receives it sees it. The copy is saved as
name-no-metadata.pdf; rename it to whatever you like.
Can I remove metadata from a PDF with a password?
No. Open it with the password, save a copy without it, and clean the copy.
Does it work for Word files?
No, only PDFs. Save the Word file as PDF first, then clean the PDF.
Sending photos too? Remove metadata from a photo clears the location and camera details. To check a PDF without changing it, use PDF metadata.
