Remove metadata from a photo (EXIF and GPS)
A photo from a phone usually carries the exact place it was taken, the date and the phone's model. Remove all of it before you post a photo, send it to a stranger or sell something online: pick the photo and download a clean copy.
How to remove metadata from a photo
- Tap Choose a photo and pick a JPG, PNG or WebP file.
- See what the photo reveals. Private details, like the location, are marked in red.
- Tap Download photo without metadata, and share that copy instead of the original.
What is removed and what stays
- Removed: the GPS location; the dates; the camera's make, model and serial numbers; the owner's and author's names; the software and editing history; comments, captions and keywords (EXIF, XMP and IPTC); the hidden preview; and the extra data some phones add after the picture, such as depth maps.
- Kept: the picture itself, exactly as it was; its colour profile, so the colours look the same; and its orientation, so a phone photo isn't shown sideways.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing metadata lower the quality?
No. The picture is copied as it is, without compressing it again; only the metadata is left out. The file usually gets a little smaller.
Do WhatsApp, Facebook or Reddit remove metadata?
Usually, for photos posted or sent the normal way. But when you send a photo as a document or file, by email, or as a link from Google Drive or Dropbox, the file goes as it is, metadata included. Removing it yourself first is the safe way.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on the phone, choose the photo and download the clean copy. On an iPhone the photo arrives as a JPG. To stop new photos from saving the place, turn off location in the camera's settings.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and the photo is never sent to dedigger or anyone else. dedigger only counts when a clean copy is downloaded.
Which files work?
JPG, PNG and WebP. For a HEIC photo on a computer, save it as JPG first.
Only want to look? The EXIF viewer shows the same details with the place on a map. Sending a document? Remove metadata from a PDF clears the author, dates and earlier versions.
